Pet Crematory Case Study

Eliminating Ammonia & Amine Odors at Honor Pet

Alkaline hydrolysis processing was producing a sharp, low-concentration ammonia and amine odor that generic air filtration couldn't touch. Two CleanLeaf units with specialty gas-phase carbon media brought the working environment back under control.

A Nuisance Odor That Standard Carbon Couldn't Solve

Honor Pet operates a pet crematory using alkaline hydrolysis, or water cremation, rather than flame-based cremation. In its processing area, the team was dealing with a mild but noticeable odor problem driven by ammonia and trace amines produced during the process.

The odor was sharp and detectable at very low concentrations, yet it stayed below occupational exposure thresholds — a nuisance-odor and workplace-comfort issue rather than an acute safety one. That distinction mattered: a generic air cleaner wasn't the right answer, because standard activated carbon isn't formulated to capture basic nitrogen compounds like ammonia and amines.

What the facility needed was a filtration solution precisely matched to that chemistry, one that could also mount overhead to preserve floor space, run quietly enough for staff to work beneath it, and plug into standard 115V power.

What the Facility Needed
  • Eliminate ammonia and amine odors before they affected the working environment
  • Operate quietly enough for staff to work and communicate comfortably beneath the units
  • Mount overhead to preserve working floor space
  • Meet standard electrical requirements — 115V plug-in, 10A draw per unit
The Solution

CleanLeaf Units Paired with OEM Ammonia Media

The CleanLeaf team recommended a filtration system paired with OEM specialty carbon media formulated specifically for ammonia and amine mitigation, clarifying early on that standard activated carbon alone wasn't appropriate for this odor profile — the application called for chemically treated media that captures basic nitrogen compounds through acid-base reaction mechanisms.

Honor Pet initially evaluated both Blue Ox and CleanLeaf options and explored a four-unit configuration. CleanLeaf guided the team through the product distinction — CleanLeaf was the correct fit for ammonia and amine removal, while the Blue Ox line wasn't optimized for the same chemistry — and Honor Pet chose to start with two CleanLeaf units to validate performance before expanding further.

For the specialty ammonia-removal media, CleanLeaf presented two sourcing paths: a faster US-based equivalent (6–7 week lead time) or the original OEM ammonia filter (14–16 weeks via ocean freight). Given the sensitivity of the application, CleanLeaf recommended the OEM option to maintain confidence in performance, and Honor Pet confirmed they wanted to proceed with it despite the longer lead time.

The Results

A Solution Matched to the Chemistry, Not a Generic Fix

Honor Pet moved from technical evaluation to a confirmed purchase of two CleanLeaf units with OEM specialty ammonia/amine filtration media. The buying team came away with clear expectations around installation, lead times, and future filter replacement planning.

Starting with two units rather than committing to four gave Honor Pet a way to validate performance before any broader rollout, including a possible additional unit for a separate heated cabinet application down the line.

After the solution was finalized, the customer described the outcome as “amazing” and is already planning future replacement media quantities.

Outcomes
  • Solution aligned to the specific odor chemistry — not a generic filtration recommendation
  • Phased purchase path let Honor Pet validate performance before broader rollout
  • Clear guidance on installation, electrical specs, lead times, and future media ordering
  • Relationship remained active beyond the sale, including discussion of additional units and reorder quantities

Why CleanLeaf for Ammonia and Amine Odor Control

What made this evaluation work is what makes the approach right for chemically specific odor challenges generally.

Engineered for Chemically Specific Filtration

Specialty treated carbon media neutralizes ammonia and amine compounds at low concentrations, where standard activated carbon falls short.

Quiet Operation for Active Work Environments

Units are designed for quiet, variable-speed operation so staff can work and communicate comfortably directly beneath them.

Flexible Ceiling-Mount Installation

Standard overhead mounting via eye-bolts keeps units off the floor and out of the way in active processing environments.

Application-Specific Media Guidance

CleanLeaf works through your odor source chemistry, CFM requirements, and installation constraints to recommend the right media and configuration.
