Residential Woodshop Case Study

Eliminating Wood Dust Migration at Olde Dog Woodworking

A basement woodshop's source-capture dust collection wasn't catching everything, and propping the door open in a St. Louis winter wasn't a real fix. A single CleanLeaf OX1100 solved both problems at once.

The Challenge

Source Capture Wasn't Catching Everything

Olde Dog Woodworking is a small home-based woodshop specializing in fine custom residential installations — fireplace mantles, custom cabinetry, bars, bookshelves, and high-end specialty built-ins. Located in a basement, the shop faced persistent issues with airborne wood dust that would spread beyond the workspace despite existing dust collection equipment.

The shop already had a source-capture dust collection system, but wood dust was still constantly airborne and settling on surfaces throughout the space. The workaround had been opening the shop door while working — a nightmare during cold St. Louis winters, and not a real solution.

What the shop needed was a way to catch the fine particles that source capture misses, without opening a door to the outside every time the tools came out.

What the Shop Needed
  • Control airborne wood dust without opening doors in winter
  • Reduce dust accumulation on surfaces and equipment
  • Operate quietly in a residential setting
  • Work as a secondary system alongside existing dust collection
The Solution

One Strategically Placed OX1100

CleanLeaf OX1100 — formerly branded as Blue Ox Air Cleaners — was installed to eliminate dust and prevent it from migrating out of the shop and into the living space. Because the basement shop is small, a single, strategically positioned unit was enough to generate an effective air circulation pattern.

The OX1100 uses a Straight-Thru airflow pattern, drawing air through the filters and pushing it out through a grill and fan on the opposite side, continuously filtering airborne wood particles rather than only capturing dust at the source.

It's built to run quietly enough for residential settings, and works just as well as a single unit in a small shop or in multi-unit configurations for larger spaces.

The Results

Dust Migration Eliminated, Doors Stay Shut

The single CleanLeaf OX1100 unit delivered comprehensive improvements throughout the shop. Airborne particles dropped dramatically, and wood dust migration beyond the workshop was eliminated entirely — no more opening doors for ventilation, even through a St. Louis winter.

The unit runs quietly enough for a residential basement and works seamlessly as a secondary system alongside the existing source-capture dust collection, continuously removing the fine airborne particles that source capture alone couldn't catch.

Olde Dog Woodworking now runs shop dust control that keeps the dust in the shop — not the house.

Outcomes
  • Airborne particles dramatically reduced throughout the shop
  • Wood dust migration completely eliminated beyond the workshop
  • No more opening doors in winter for ventilation
  • Quiet operation suitable for a residential basement
  • Works seamlessly alongside existing source-capture dust collection
Scott used to prop the shop door open just to keep working through St. Louis winters — a real problem when the alternative was breathing dust indoors. With the OX1100 running, he doesn't have to open the door anymore, and, as he put it, “my wife is happier now.” — Scott, Olde Dog Woodworking

Quiet Operation for Residential Settings

Engineered to run quietly so you can work in a basement shop without disturbing family activities upstairs.

Ends the Winter Door-Opening Problem
